About

Our Cups + Cones Clay Cutters are designed to create tapered walls that sit on top of separate base circles. They’re sized to work beautifully with our Round Base Clay Cutters and pair well with common forms, saucers, and trays. Thick handles add durability and a comfortable grip, and with proper care they’re reusable for hundreds of applications.

  • Studio-Grade Durability – Built to withstand daily studio use. Extra-thick PLA construction withstands daily professional use, resists warping from wet clay, and maintains crisp edges through thousands of cuts
  • Tapered Wall Design – Each cutter creates a tapered wall blank that wraps into well-balanced cups, mugs, and cones with stable footing and comfortable rims.
  • Perfect Cup Sizing Every Time – Born in a working pottery studio where efficiency meets artistry. These cutters are sized for comfortable, functional drinkware so you can build consistent sets without constant measuring
  • Time-Saving Efficiency – Designed by potters who understand the demands of production work. Cut perfect shapes in seconds instead of minutes of hand-forming, allowing you to focus on glazing, decorating, and other creative details
  • Professional Results for All Skill Levels – Achieve uniform, gallery-quality pieces whether you're a beginner or master potter, perfect for Etsy sellers and studio professionals
  • Compatible with All Clay Bodies – Works flawlessly with stoneware, porcelain, earthenware, and polymer clays from leather-hard to soft throwing consistency
  • Investment-Grade Tool – One-time purchase replaces disposable templates and hand-cutting tools, paying for itself within your first commissioned dinnerware set
How to Use

Step 1: Prepare Your Clay
Roll out your clay slab to desired thickness (typically 1/4" to 3/8" for plates and bowls) on a non-stick surface or canvas. Let clay rest until leather-hard for cleanest cuts, though soft clay also works.

Step 2: Position the Cutter
Place the cutter firmly on your clay slab with even pressure. For best results, ensure the entire cutting edge makes contact with the clay surface.

Step 3: Cut Your Shape
Press down firmly and evenly around the entire cutter edge. For thicker slabs, use a gentle rocking motion while maintaining downward pressure. You should feel the cutter reach through to your work surface.

Step 4: Remove Excess Clay
Lift the cutter straight up. Peel away excess clay from around your cut piece. Save scraps for recycling back into your clay body.

Step 5: Refine and Shape
Smooth cut edges with a damp sponge. For bowls and dishes, transfer your flat cut piece to a mold, drape form, or use hand-forming techniques to create dimension while the clay is still pliable.

Pro Tips:

  • Dust cutter edges with cornstarch for ultra-clean release
  • Clean cutters with a damp cloth after use to prevent clay buildup
  • Allow cut pieces to firm up slightly before moving to prevent warping
Size Guide

Sizing

  • Latte Mug – 3" base, 4" rim, 4.8" tall
  • Standard Mug – 2.5" base, 3.5" rim, 4" tall
  • Martini – 1.5" base, 4" rim, 3.6" tall

Each clay cutter is sized to create a wall that sits on top of a base. Use the Cups + Cones clay cutter to cut your wall shape, then cut a circle that matches the base size (3", 2.5", or 1.5"). Bevel the joining edges of the wall, then wrap and join the wall into a cylinder on top of the base. For the Martini Clay Cutter, use a 1.5" base if you’re attaching it to a stem, or size up the base for a stable, stemless martini cup.
