PROFILE RIBS AND PROFILE TOOLS
What are profile ribs and profile tools and why use them?
A profile rib is a shaping tool you press against the clay while throwing to “set” the exterior (or interior) curve of a form.
Beyond smoothing, a good rib helps straighten or arc walls, refine transitions, compress the surface for a clean finish or add texture. In production, that translates into quicker throwing, more consistent batches, and fewer seconds.
Are profile tools beginner friendly?
Yes. They shorten the learning curve and help newer throwers understand what a finished silhouette should feel like on the wheel.
Can I use with my beginner students and try-it workshops?
That’s their superpower—they help beginners create basic forms that look great - even if the inside is a little uneven or uncentered.
Which profile tools should I buy first?
Start with a textured, straight or slight taper for cylinders/tumblers, a bowl arc, and one multi‑radius for vases and shoulders. Add specialty curves as your line grows.
